Courtroom Computing: WOW the Jury with Technology

Details

Date: 03/22/2012

3 CLE Credits

Seminar Overview:
Now, learn the straightforward, cost-efficient way to use basic computer hardware and inexpensive software to employ an extensive array of computer weapons in the courtroom to show the jury the details of your proof in a clear, concise, and persuasive way. Learn which computers to use, which software programs get the job done, and how to clear the technical and logistical hurdles that will allow you to present your proof in the most modern, technologically sophisticated way available.

Hear from NYSTLA Past President Richard Gurfein, a trained electrical engineer and accomplished trial lawyer, current NYSTLA Long Island Affiliate President Michael Levine who has been one of the earliest and most successful users of computer technology, especially the iPad, and Robert Danzi, a lawyer who has been using computer technology in the courtroom for the better part of the last decade.

Richard Gurfein will demonstrate the presentation of documentary evidence, video testimony and its use on direct and cross examination, as well as the effective use of computer technology in preparing daily copy for immediate or next day projection. He will illustrate the Circus Ponies software and Trial Smart, demonstrating the flexibility in moving from document to document, the ability to call out and highlight important entries, and the ability to change from one document to another or from one medical illustration to another or to compare different records side by side.

Michael Levine will focus his discussion on the iPad and the myriad ways it can be used to improve the litigators practice. He will show how programs such as Keynote, Trial Pad, Good Reader and Jury Tracker can be used to streamline practice, and evidence preparation and presentation. He will illustrate the utility of file sharing, mail, calendar, and contacts accessibility and the iPads use as a legal research tool. He will provide an effective demonstration of how the iPad can be used both in court and in mediation.

Robert Danzi will focus on how to streamline the presentation to make it simple and cost-effective. He will show how, for the cost of a computer and some off-the-shelf software, you can assemble and pilot the presentation system in the courtroom, exhibiting to the jury the key pieces of evidence in the case.

After this presentation, neither cost nor complexity will prevent you from using the most up to date multimedia presentation techniques in the courtroom.
