Details

Date: 05/17/2012

3 CLE Credits

SEMINAR OVERVIEW:

This program will assist the advanced and new trial attorneys in understanding and using basic anatomical and clinical pathology facts and principles. We will take you through the basics of:

1. A typical trauma case: What causes injury, pain, disability, permanency? How is evidence presented for and against these issues?

2. A typical toxic/environmental case: What causes mesothelioma? How is cause and effect proven?

3. A typical medical liability case: How does one identify and prove an avoidable bad outcome did or did not occur?

A defense malpractice attorney who is also a R.N. will discuss how the attorney should read, understand and use the medical record in context of a trial.

Two healthcare professionals from the Mount Sinai Department of Pathology will discuss the pathologic basis for traumatic injury (and pain and suffering); the pathologic basis for toxic injury (e.g., cancer), and the use of clinical pathologic data to identify what has occurred, is
occurring, and will occur in injured patients (plaintiffs).

We will also cover:
? The SOAP note - Subjective, Objective, Assessment, Plan
? Variations in the record
? Basic medical definitions
? Cause and effect - the differential diagnosis methodology
? Asphyxia and shock
