Judges of the 9th Judicial District will discuss what they have seen “work”, and what hasn’t worked (i.e. the “do’s and don’ts” of Trial Practice) from Jury Selection to Summation. They will discuss common errors, things that they see that they liked and what they did not like; what common errors are made concerning evidence and statements made in front of a jury; and they will have an open discussion, from the Judiciary’s perspective, as to how we can be better in our craft. The Judges have the benefit of seeing many different Trial Lawyers and Styles, in many different counties (Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange and Court of Claims), so they also have a feel as to what works in what county. Also, having spoken to many jurors over the years, the feedback they received from the jurors would be invaluable for all of us to know. All attorneys attending will be instructed not to ask questions of Judges to get an anticipatory ruling on a case. This is also a great opportunity to meet the Judges, as, usually, the only time you get to meet them is when you get assigned out to trial.
Justices Lewis Lubell, Paul Marx, Terry Jane Ruderman, William Giacomo, Lawrence Ecker, and Charles Wood will be participating.
The event will be hosted by NYSTLA Affiliate President and Dean, Anthony Pirrotti, Jr.
Joseph Ruhl, Esq, President of Orange Bank & Trust is generously sponsoring the CLE, and light refreshments and snacks will be provided.
